The Pennsy Trail is a proposed 7-mile multi-use bicycle and pedestrian trail that will be a resource to both the transportation and recreation systems of the Indianapolis area. |

PROJECT DESCRIPTION It will connect with the planned Cumberland Pennsy Trail from German Church Road at the east border of Marion County, to the Pleasant Run Trail linking east-side neighborhoods with Garfield Park and ultimately with the White River. The trail utilizes the abandoned Penn Central rail corridor parallel to US 40 / East Washington Street. |

INDOT ASSISTANCE The Indiana Department of Transportation constructed a tunnel through I-465 and left the Shadeland Avenue Bridge in place when the trail was abandoned, thereby supporting the trail conversion concept. [more] |

PUBLIC MEETINGS A public meeting was held on June 18th, 2003 to introduce the project and to seek preferences on connecting routes to the trail.
A formal public hearing was held on February 22, 2007 to obtain comments on the project. |

CORRIDOR HISTORY The rail corridor has had a variety of owners beginning with the completion of the trail line in 1853 under the Indiana Central Railroad. One of only a few rail lines laid out based upon an existing roadway, the corridor parallels the existing National Road (US 40). [more] |
