|
Note: The following route description begins from the current ADT website description of Segment 5 of the Southern Indiana route. It modifies the route description from mile 316.7 westward to better describe the Newburgh area, to alert trail users to seasonal flood detour potential, and to incorporate a recently dedicated greenway section along the Evansville downtown riverfront. It moves the description of downtown Evansville to Section 6 to link to the corresponding route/mileage table.

[existing text] ".......The ADT is on gravel roads from Gentryville through Folsomville to Boonville, where a visit to the Warrick County Museum is recommended. On gravel roads, the ADT heads south through Pelzer to IN 662 (Hoosier Heritage Scenic Trail)......................... [continuing from above text, insert the following for the route through Newburgh and Evansville] .......where the ADT rejoins the Ohio River at a park overlooking the Newburgh Lock and Dam. Newburgh, two miles further west, is an attractive historic river village and tourist destination. Continuing westward into Vanderburgh County, Angel Mounds State Historic Site and interpretive museum is the location of the largest and best preserved prehistoric Indian Mounds dating from 1200 to 1400. From there the ADT follows gravel roads along the Ohio River flood plain to downtown Evansville (note that the alternative route westward from Angel Mounds circumvents seasonal flooding in the Ohio River floodplain, and a currenbtly gated section near the Ohio River that requires permission to traverse).

SEGMENT Six: EVANSVILLE to Illinois State
Line (Wabash River) (new text follows that is based on the recently completed downtown greenway) The ADT follows Pigeon Creek Greenway westward. A side trip two blocks north of the junction of Shawnee Drive and Veterans Memorial Parkway leads to Riverside Historic District with a six block array of elegant historic residences. The greenway continues across Shawnee to the top of the Ohio River levee past the notable Museum of Arts, Science, History and Transportation, its sculpture garden and its neighbor, the restored historic pagoda Visitors Center. All are worth a visit. The greenway passes several striking monuments and river overlooks to join the downtown Riverfront Esplanade and its historic timeline plaques, then passes through a riverboat gaming and hotel complex before rejoining city streets at Fulton Avenue. The ADT continues through the city's West Side to Howell Park Wetlands and to Burdette Park, which has a water park as well as camping. Leaving Evansville, the ADT continues on gravel roads to Mount Vernon and Hovey Lake which is a Cypress swamp. The ADT crosses the Wabash River on IN 62 into Illinois
